The Heap

Bytes and Pieces

New Discovery Channel show visits Sims Recycling in quest to shred some e-waste.

If you’ve attended WasteExpo, you are almost certainly familiar with SSI Shredding Systems, a company that prides itself on being able to shred any object or material so as to better facilitate its processing or disposal. (Imagine “Will It Blend?” but on a scale accommodating old Cadillacs, hot tubs, and huge skips full of phone books.) Discovery Channel Canada executives clearly saw the entertainment potential and have seen fit to give SSI their own show, “Shred!”, which premieres this week on the Canadian version of the network (Sadly, for now the show appears to be a Canadian exclusive). The first episode takes place at another industry stalwart, Sims Recycling, where the SSI guys take on huge piles of e-waste.

Worthwhile TV concept or a grind to watch? Only time will tell.
