Fresh from the "What else can we put batteries in?" file comes simplehuman's Sensor Can, a trashcan smart enough to open when it senses your presence. Not only that, but it can automatically modify it's behavior to accommodate different tasks you might be doing, such as the frequent dumping of kitchen scraps which might require it to keep the lid open longer.
It's all very Jetsons, but clearly the people who designed this device do not own dogs.
