Pretty Bins in Pittsburgh

The Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh did its bid to promote recycling and environmental awareness by inviting eight artists to spruce up trash and recycling receptacles. As reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the decorated bins -- depicting everything from a recycling robot to a fish caught in a discarded plastic bag -- generally had the desired effect. But it was hard not to chuckle at this passage from the Post-Gazette report, indicating that not everyone was 100-percent clear on the message:

Alayna Steele, 19, of Washington, Pa., stopped to take a photo on her cell phone of a flower-adorned bin that caught her attention.

"It makes me want to throw away more things," she said.
