WasteGames

Perhaps you remember the 1983 sci-fi drama “WarGames,” in which two teens nearly initiate World War III by dialing up North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) using a modem the size of an anvil. Now, imagine that global thermonuclear war was triggered not by a youthful Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, but by a hapless garbage truck driver.

The truck was trying to collect trash from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, where NORAD is based, when its cargo tripped an electronic explosive detector, locking down the underground facility for two hours and summoning police and bomb-sniffing dogs. The source of the false alarm was never ultimately determined, though military sources say they suspect the detector was faulty.

Sounds like the next trash pickup will include some e-waste. How about a nice game of chess?
