Why Some Sacramento Businesses Want to Reform Commercial Trash Collection

Some businesses in Sacramento's urban core want to reform commercial waste collection, in part to reduce the number of dumpsters and trash trucks crowding the city's alleys. But others worry the move could be expensive.

The Sacramento Regional Solid Waste Authority has hired a consulting firm to explore a new commercial trash hauling service model that could open Sacramento’s alleys to greater public use. The cluster of smelly dumpsters behind businesses is a key hurdle to a fresh city trend of alleyway activation, said Emily Baime Michaels, executive director of the Midtown Business Association.
