Newark, Calif., Sues Fremont Over Transfer Station

Erin Spinka

Fremont, Calif. -- Having shared the Tri-Cities landfill for decades, Fremont and Newark, Calif., now are beginning a legal battle concerning the location of a future transfer station. In preparation for the closing of Tri-Cities, likely to come this year, Fremont has selected an old bottle-capping plant as the site for a transfer station from which it could transport trash to a landfill in Livermore, Calif. Newark officials have filed suit, however, claiming that the site is too close to its border and residential areas. Although Newark has been hauling trash to Tri-Cities, located in Fremont, for years, Newark officials reportedly say that Fremont’s larger size offers more location options than Newark’s 13 square miles.
