Wisconsin officials propose garbage fee increase to discourage out-of-state trash

To keep out-of-state trash from entering Wisconsin landfills, state legislators are proposing a new garbage tipping fee that would increase from $3 to $10 per ton. According to an article in the Duluth News Tribune, Wisconsin’s cheaper dumping rates have attracted out-of-state trash haulers from other states including Minnesota and Illinois. While environmentalists are in favor of the proposed bill, opponents say that the fee increase will benefit private companies that have invested in landfill expansions in the state.
