EPA Removes New York Landfill from Superfund List

Deanna Hart

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Washington, has removed the North Sea Municipal Landfill in Southampton, N.Y. from the National Priorities List, which it had been on since 1986. Once used for municipal solid waste, refuse and septic system waste disposal, the 130-acre site was placed on the list because of groundwater contamination concerns. After several cleanup agreements between the city and the EPA, the landfill was successfully cleaned with studies showing that the groundwater contamination did not pose any health or environmental threats.
