Houston-based Waste Management has signed a 10-year contract with Georgia Power to supply the utility with electricity generated at the firm’s Savannah, Ga., landfill. The contract is subject to approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission.

The landfill gas-to-energy facility at the Superior Landfill and Recycling Center in Savannah, Ga., can produce 6.4 megawatts of electricity. According to a press release, one megawatt can power roughly 250 homes. Georgia Power will receive all of the electricity generated at the facility.

“By tapping into the landfill gas to produce electricity, Georgia Power is both continuing to diversify its expanding renewable portfolio throughout the state, and doing what's good for the environment,” said Jeff Burleson, director of resource policy and planning for Georgia Power, in a press release.
