Pennsylvanians Late on Garbage Bills Make the Papers

Lynn Schenkman

Pen Argyl, Pa. – The borough of Pen Argyl and its collection agency, Grand Central Sanitation Inc., are planning to send warnings to customers with delinquent accounts. According to the

Allentown Morning Call

, the warnings will leave customers 30 days to pay their garbage bills. If they do not pay their bills, their names will be published in the newspaper.

"With some utilities, you can turn off the service if they don’t pay," Borough Manager Jaymes Vettraino told the Morning Call. "If you don’t pay your sewer we can tun off the water, but if you don’t pay your garbage, we can’t stop picking it up. It’s a health and welfare issue … these people who aren’t paying are essentially stealing from those who are." The borough also is considering more attention-grabbing tactics such as placing liens on properties.
