DeKalb County, Ill., Formalizing Landfill Fees

A new agreement between Waste Management and DeKalb County will generate more revenue as more solid waste is dumped at the landfill outside Cortland – money long earmarked for the jail expansion.

DeKalb County Planning & Zoning Committee members will consider swapping the tipping fee for a host fee agreement with Waste Management at Wednesday’s meeting. Under this new agreement, the county will collect $4.60 a ton of solid waste dumped into the agreement, instead of the $1.27 a ton under the tipping fee.

“It’s an additional revenue source,” said Tracy Jones, a Kirkland Republican from District 1.

Jones, who is expected to chair the County Board’s Jail Solutions Committee, added that the new agreement could allow the county to afford a $23 million bond to add onto the jail. The agreement will go before the board next month.
