Newton County officials are mulling significant changes to the scope and size of the county’s landfill, potentially relieving the county of millions of dollars in liability, ending a years-long lawsuit in which the state Supreme Court three times ruled against Newton County, and even bringing in a revenue stream that could help fund community improvements for residents who live near what would be an approximately 900-acre site.

#While that’s the upside to the public-private partnership agreement proposed at the Board of Commissioners work session Tuesday, some citizens raised concerns about whether this agreement is the best arrangement for the county and residents who would be directly impacted by an expansion of the existing landfill. Some expressed frustration that their homes and neighborhood will only continue to suffer, even with required buffers and odor control measures.
