A smoky fire that snowed ash on a nearby colonia Saturday prompted officials to evacuate about 50 residents from their homes Saturday evening.
The evacuation came after firefighters from Starr and Hidalgo counties spent Saturday battling a massive fire at a paper recycling plant.
Firefighters remained at the scene of a blaze in the Las Lomas neighborhood near Rio Grande City late Saturday afternoon. The fire began about 4 a.m Saturday at Fiber Management of Texas at 1 E. Sauz St., according to the Rio Grande City fire department.
The company trades secondary fiber for Mexican paper mills. A call placed at a number registered to the business went unanswered.
