Compiled by the Waste Age staff

A total of 19.7 million tons of solid waste were handled by waste management facilities in Virginia in 2010, according to a new report from the state’s Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The total marks a slight increase from the 19.6 million tons handled in 2009 and represents the first year-over-year increase in Virginia since 2006.

Of the 19.7 million tons, 14.2 million were generated in Virginia, and 5.4 million tons were from other states. Approximately 12.4 million tons were landfilled, while roughly 539,000 tons were recycled.

The full report is available on the DEQ’s website.
