$13.5M Transfer Station Opens in Grimes, Iowa

The Metro Waste Authority's new $13.5 million transfer station opened Thursday in Grimes.

As the first order of business, a garbage truck backed in and dumped a few tons of spoiled food, empty boxes and other debris onto the floor.

The facility will never look the same.

The Metro Northwest Transfer Station will take in about 970 tons of waste a day — most of it from suburbs on the north and west sides  — before sending it along to its final resting place at the Metro Park East Landfill in Mitchellville.
