A Waste Age Staff Report

THE 2004 WASTE AGE 100 indicates that the solid waste management business is finally picking up, after what seemed like an interminable recession. While the top four company rankings remained the same — Waste Management Inc., followed by Allied Waste Industries, then Republic Services Inc. and Onyx North America — all four posted revenue increases from 2002 to 2003.

“For Allied Waste, 2003 reflected a continuation of strong cash flow generation and the return of both positive price and volume metrics for the first time in over two years, despite the fact that the industry has not yet experienced the full benefits of an economic recovery,” Tom Van Weelden, Allied's chairman and CEO, said when he announced his company's year-end results. Allied's revenues increased from $5.191 billion in 2002 to $5.248 billion in 2003. Republic Services also “delivered consistent performance, including record amounts of free cash flow,” according to James O'Connor, the company's chairman and CEO. Republic's revenue for 2003 was $2.518 billion compared to $2.365 billion during 2002. And Onyx North America's revenues increased from $1.3 billion in 2002 to $1.32 billion.

Looking further down Waste Age's 11th annual listing of the 100 most powerful players in the waste industry, the majority of companies seemed to echo these sentiments, having posted revenue increases in 2003, too. “We are very pleased with the progress we have made in 2003 in a number of areas,” said Jim W. Perry, Waste Industries USA's president and CEO. The company maintained its No. 14 ranking from the 2003 listing and increased its revenues by 7.4 percent to $270.5 million. Waste Industries was particularly pleased to see a moderate improvement in prices to offset higher fuel, insurance and disposal costs, Perry added. Peoria Disposal, No. 29 on this year's listing, increased its revenues from $52.1 million to $55.8 million. And, even the revenues for the last company on the ranking jumped up slightly — Potomac Landfill Inc. recorded revenues of $7.2 million in 2003, whereas No. 100 on the 2002 listing, Tri Rinse Inc., earned $7.1 million one year ago.

With issues such as rising fuel costs, aggressive competition for new customers among the independents, more costly insurance premiums and price hikes being difficult to implement, are 2003's revenue increases really a sign of economic improvement?

Yes, say the optimistic group of haulers.

Pricing has stabilized and new technology such as bioreactor landfills will be adopted in the industry over the next three to five years, which should improve the use of landfill capacity, Bruce Parker, president of the Environmental Industry Associations, recently told a group of waste industry analysts.

But perhaps A. Maurice Myers, Waste Management's outgoing chairman and CEO, summed up the haulers' perspective the best. “2003 was a year of great progress,” he said. “I believe we have terrific momentum heading into 2004, and we are focused on leveraging that momentum in the coming year.”
