Waste Age 100 of 2009

Despite last year's economic turbulence, many firms in the 16th annual Waste Age 100 — which ranks firms based on revenue — posted revenue increases in 2008.

The firm topping the list — Houston-based Waste Management — brought in $13.39 billion in revenue in 2008, up from $13.31 billion in 2007. Looking further down this year's list, Cincinnati-based Rumpke, ranked No. 15, saw its revenue jump from $375 million in 2007 to $407 million last year. Peoria, Ill.-based Coulter Cos., which occupies the No. 33 spot, increased its revenue from $68 million in 2007 to $75 million in 2008. Will revenue growth continue in 2009?

Please keep in mind that while we strive to make the Waste Age 100 the most comprehensive list of the industry's largest solid waste firms, we recognize that it is not bulletproof, depending as it does on privately held firms voluntarily disclosing their financial information. We will work as hard as possible to persuade firms that did not disclose their information for this year's listing to do so for next year's.
