Waste Management Inc. is nearly two-thirds of the way to reaching its 2020 sustainability goal of tripling its annual recycling volume, the company said in its latest sustainability report.
The Houston-based Waste Management said in a news release on the report that it has extracted almost 12.9 million tons of recyclables from the waste stream, or 61 percent more than in 2007. The company also produces enough waste to energy to power 1.2 million homes, 60 percent of its goal.
It has reduced carbon dioxide emissions from its fleet by 20 percent, exceeding its 2020 goal of 15 percent. It also has met its goal of creating 100 certified Wildlife Habitat sites, protecting 25,000 acres.
