DOT Releases Preliminary Highway Fatality Estimates for 2000

Washington, D.C. — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, says that preliminary estimates suggest traffic fatality rates increased in 2000, from an all-time low in 1999. However, fatalities involving large truck crashes dropped from 5,362 in 1999 to 5,307 in 2000.
