Engine Makers Fight Bush on Diesel Rules

Washington, D.C. — The fight by several engine manufacturers is continuing, as they attempt to delay the October deadline for reducing truck engine emissions. Detroit-based Detroit Diesel and Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, Ill., have argued in the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., that they need more time to prepare for the fall deadline, while the Bush administration says it will press forward with enforcement of the rule once it takes effect on October 1.

Meantime, Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins Inc. and Mack Trucks Inc., Allentown, Pa., say they already have met the requirements for the October deadline.
