Fines Issued for Glass and Plastic in New Yorkers’ Bins

New York – Building owners trying to recycle glass and plastic in the city are getting more than a slap on the wrist. In July, New York City Mayor Bloomberg's administration cut the $55 million glass and plastic recycling program from the budget to help reduce the city’s $5 billion deficit. The city no longer picks up glass and/or plastic for recycling but does take metal and paper. The city is now charging offenders who place glass or plastic materials in recycle bins with a $25 dollar fine. Until now, the penalty has only been a written warning. New York has received criticism from special interest groups for decreasing recycling activity.
