New York — Yesterday, Staten Island's Fresh Kills landfill — which has been disposing of New York's waste for more than half a century — received its final barge load of trash. At the same time, the city's sanitation department announced an interim plan to dispose of New York's 13,000 tons per day of waste. According to the plan, the garbage will be taken to 15 private facilities to be disposed of out-of-state. State Representative Camille "Bud" George of Pennsylvania (a state set to be one of the main recipients of New York's trash) has pledged to do something "before [Pennsylvania suffers] one more fatality from out-of-state trash trucks or another neighborhood has to face a landfill in their backyard."
