Stamford, Conn. — Now in its 17th year, the 2002 Great American Cleanup, a project of Keep America Beautiful, mobilized more than 2.3 million volunteers this week to improve thousands of communities.
Through various projects, volunteers collected more than 110 million pounds of litter and debris; cleared nearly 66,000 miles of road, streets and highways; cleaned up more than 80,000 acres of parks; and collected more than 377,000 tires throughout the United States, parts of Canada, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Bermuda and St. John.
