Nanakuli, Hawaii — The state health department has decided to keep the Waimanalo Gulch Landfill open for at least another 8 months, which will fill the dump above its legal capacity. While city officials originally estimated that it would take several years to fill it up, it is expected to reach legal capacity in only a few weeks. Officials want to raise the landfill’s legal height by 30 feet so they can buy some time to come up with another plan.
