Allied Waste Subsidiary Announces Acquisition Agreement

Pompano Beach, Fla. — A subsidiary of Allied Waste Industries Inc. has announced a merger agreement to acquire Star Services Group Inc. in a cash transaction valued at approximately $34 million plus the assumption of Star Services Group’s long-term debt.

Head of Freightliner Steps Down

Frankfurt, Germany — James Hebe, head of DaimlerChrysler’s U.S. truck unit Freightliner, stepped down Friday after a year of deep losses. Reiner Schmueckle, formerly with DaimlerChrysler, has replaced Hebe as head of the unit.

Arizona Litter Survey Results Published Phoenix — The Center for Marine Conservation announced the results of its 2000 Dirty Dozen litter survey, a part of the International Coastal Cleanup where volunteers record what they find along the shorelines of lakes and rivers. Beverage cans were at the top of the listing, accounting for nearly 23 percent of all litter collected.

Pataki Selects Three Brownfields Sites

Albany, N.Y. — New York Governor George E. Pataki announced three new sites were selected for the state’s ReBuild Now-NY pilot program, which promotes the cleanup and reuse of brownfield sites with high economic potential. The three sites are located at the Village of Green Island Industrial Park in Albany County, the Francis S. Gabreski Airport in Suffolk County and Parcel Two of the Union Ship Canal in Buffalo.

Dana Receives Environmental Award

Toledo, Ohio — Dana Corp.’s Perfect Circle Division Richmond Liner Foundry recently was given the Indiana Governor’s Award for Excellence in Recycling. Since its program began in 1999, the company has recycled 64 million pounds of quenched cupola slag, a nonhazardous waste material, into a substitute raw material used for making cement.

-Environmental Support Solutions (Environ.com), Tempe, Ariz., is acquiring RMS Systems Inc., Denver, a developer of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) training and safety software.

Announcement

-Cummins Inc., Columbus, Ind., has ceased discussions with International Truck and Engine Corp., Chicago, on a potential heavy duty engine development and manufacturing joint-venture.

Award

-Weyerhaeuser Co., Federal Way, Wash., has announced that its Richmond, Va., recycling plant has won the 2000 safety award, presented by the American Forest and Paper Association, Washington, D.C. The Richmond facility reported zero accidents last year.

Recap

-A total of 614 exhibitors from 25 countries and 69,000 visitors worldwide attended the Envitec 2001 10th Annual Trade Fair and Conference for Environmental Technology, in Düsseldorf, Germany.

New Facilities

-Peterbilt Motors Co., Denton, Texas, has opened three locations: a full-service branch in Scott, La.; a full-service dealership in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada; and a retail parts branch in Carson City, Nev.

- Document Destruction and Recycling Services (DDRS), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has opened a confidential material shredding site in Davenport, Iowa, which will serve the Quad Cities, Mississippi River Valley and Western Illinois areas.
