Landfill Unwillingly Declared National Landmark

Fresno, Calif. -- U.S. Interior Secretary Gale Norton has named the Fresno Municipal Sanitary Landfill a national historic landmark. Fresno officials also say it is the oldest sanitary landfill in the country, operating from 1935 to 1987. According to Norton, it was the first to use the trench disposal method. However, a National Park Service official quickly recommended that the Bush administration withdraw the honor.
