Washington, D.C. — Despite a campaign promise and recent comments from Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Christie Whitman advocating greenhouse gas regulation, President George W. Bush has announced he will not support legislation to regulate carbon dioxide. This reversal was prompted by pressure from conservative Republicans and energy industry leaders, as well as advice from Vice President Dick Cheney and Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham. A White House spokesman called the President's earlier campaign promise "a mistake."
