Smurfit-Stone Tightens Operations

Chicago – Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. has announced operational changes on the coattails of acquisitions from MeadWestvaco Corp., Stamford, Conn. The company says it will convert the No.1 paper machine at its Hodge, La., mill to kraft paper and will not restart its No. 1 paper machine at the Missoula, Mont., containerboard mill. The company also says it will not continue operations at three container plants in Spartanburg, S.C., Ft. Smith, Ark., and Milwaukee. The changes will affect 154 hourly and 63 salaried employees.
