Julius Heil's business success led to a brief political career. In 1938, he ran for governor of Wisconsin and won. He turned the management of The Heil Co. over to his son Joseph F. Heil Sr., and served a single term in the state house from 1939 to 1943. Another republican, Walter Goodland, defeated Heil's bid for re-election in 1942.
