Radon a Bigger Threat Than Landfill Gases in Bridger Creek Neighborhood

Residents living next to the old Story Mill landfill were “several orders of magnitude” more at risk from naturally occurring radon gas than from the vapors seeping out of the landfill, a new study says.
Nine homes in the Bridger Creek subdivision did endure a “past health hazard” because of volatile organic compounds in their indoor air, the federal health study says. However, systems installed by the city to remove contaminated air from beneath homes reduced VOC levels “below a level of concern.”
The study, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, was conducted at the request of community members, City Manager Chris Kukulski said Tuesday. It follows an earlier study commissioned by the city and published last spring.
