NRT Launches New Optical Sorting Platform

National Recovery Technologies (NRT) unveiled its next generation platform for the company’s SpydIR and ColorPlus optical sorters.

The new platform incorporates NRT’s proprietary In-Flight Sorting technology and continuous auto-calibration, and introduces numerous new features which include performance-enhancing design and internalized controls.

The new design is a culmination of customer feedback and years of research and development aimed at improving NRT’s already industry-leading recovery rates. “For our customers, a couple of percentage points in recovery can significantly impact their bottom line,” said NRT President Matthias Erdmannsdoerfer. “Through mapping the trajectory of ejected commodities with high-speed cameras, we found that a small percentage were bouncing back and not being recovered. The new units offer a sleek, modern design, but more importantly the new shape provides advanced trajectory control that virtually eliminates “bounce backs” of any ejected objects.”

The platform’s shape creates an even more controlled ejection pattern and laminar air flow. This improvement will significantly improve the recovery of fiber and film, commodities which, industry wide, had lower optical recovery rates than containers. “It’s a huge advancement,” said Erdmannsdoerfer. The new design is delivered  with an entirely self-contained electrical system and a completely new software package, featuring an intuitive HMI (human machine interface) and powerful analytics delivered by NRT Connect. “The new generation is smarter and makes the Internet of Things a reality for optical sorting,” Erdmannsdoerfer went on. “We are well past the traditional remote log-in for technicians – these machines are proactive, constantly monitoring activity and instantaneously sending reports and messages, such as performance metrics and the life expectancy of wear parts. In the case of a fault, the NRT Service Team is notified immediately.”

The plug-and-play design allows for a faster installation, commissioning and startup, and delivery of a proven solution. “We’re not simply a supplier of detection and ejection components. We manage the entire process, and this new generation is another step in our heritage as a provider of high-performance sorting systems,” said Erdmannsdoerfer. “Everything is designed to work together, from detection and ejection to flight trajectory. The air and cooling system, an accessible and upgraded ejection block, and larger clear side panels and other improved access points are all designed to deliver recovery, purity and maintenance benefits to the customer. We’re extremely excited to bring these game-changing optical sorters to market.”

Peterbilt’s New Model 520 Expands Refuse Industry Leadership

Peterbilt Motors Company has expanded its refuse truck lineup with the new Model 520 featuring new seating configurations for route collection versatility, enhanced styling and availability of the PACCAR MX-11 engine.

“Peterbilt has led the refuse industry for nearly 50 years through vehicle innovations that bring our customers new levels of performance, reliability and versatility,” said Darrin Siver, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President. “The Model 520 continues this strong tradition with new productivity and safety features. The dual-seated / dual-drive configuration allows customers to operate the vehicle from both sides of the cab for greater convenience and comfort.”

The dual-station cab has two nearly identical work environments so drivers can seamlessly and safely operate from the left- or right-hand side, including dual controls for the parking brakes, HVAC system and stereo. The console sides are angled to give operators easy visibility and access to the same controls and displays from the right and left.

The cab also features an enhanced HVAC system for improved airflow and climate control.

“Peterbilt continues to improve the popular ProBilt interior that is ideally suited for vocational applications,” said Scott Newhouse, Peterbilt Chief Engineer. “The Model 520 features Peterbilt’s latest ProBilt design, providing an operating environment that optimizes comfort, ergonomics and productivity.”

The Model 520’s distinguished grille styling accommodates pantograph wipers that cover 27 percent more of the windshield than previous designs for increased safety during inclement weather.

Two headlight technologies are available for the Model 520, optional LED lamps and standard single halogen bulb lamps. Both provide long service and outstanding brightness and coverage.

The Model 520 is available with more power options and higher horsepower and torque than any competitive refuse collection vehicle. It is available with the PACCAR MX-11 engine which went into production earlier this year. “The PACCAR MX-11 engine provides outstanding value in a lightweight and fuel efficient design,” Newhouse said. It is available with up to 430 horsepower and 1,550 lb.-ft. of torque.

The Model 520 can also be powered by natural gas with both 9- and 11-liter engine options available.

“The Model 520 is the foundation of Peterbilt refuse collection vehicles,” said Siver. “Peterbilt’s Model 520 will give our refuse customers unprecedented levels of uptime, productivity, driver satisfaction and low cost of operation.”

Momentum Fuel Technologies Adds Roof-Mount System To Lineup Of CNG Fuel System Solutions

Momentum Fuel Technologies introduced two roof-mount configurations specially designed for the refuse industry to its line of compressed natural gas (CNG) fuel system solutions for Class 6 to Class 8 trucks.

“Our refuse customers continue to tell us they are interested in improved natural gas options, and the roof-mount system is designed to support the unique needs of this important market segment,” said W.M. “Rusty” Rush, Chairman, CEO and President, Rush Enterprises, Inc.

The roof-mount system is available in both four-tank 70 diesel gallon equivalent (DGE) and five-tank 87DGE configurations, and is designed to be a lighter and more efficient system when compared to industry standard 60DGE/75DGE roof-mount configurations.  The system is fabricated with high-strength steel and lightweight aluminum.  The tanks are made of 3MTM nanoparticle-enhanced matrix resin technology and are designed to be lighter than others in the industry.

Mike Zimmerman, General Manager of Momentum Fuel Technologies said, “We are also excited to announce that we will work with McNeilus and other refuse body manufacturers to ensure the entire line of Momentum CNG fuel systems is integrated with refuse bodies and a wide variety of other truck bodies to meet the needs of our waste customers.”

The system’s fuel management module (FMM) houses the electronics, fuel filter and fuel-fill receptacles and is conveniently located where the driver fuels the truck.  Constructed of highly-durable aircraft aluminum with a powder-coated exterior finish and Huck-bolted access cover, the compact design incorporates Parker O-ring fittings, gauges, fill ports and valves with a simplified filter access through the bottom of the module.  The FMM works in conjunction with the RushCare® telematics platform, allowing fleet managers to monitor their usage stats and better manage their fuel consumption.

Momentum’s roof-mount systems provide the industry’s best capacity by using tanks which are one-inch larger in diameter than competitive systems and hold more fuel in the same amount of system space as most existing designs.  Fuel utilization is improved due in part to an efficient fuel pressure regulator with a high-capacity filter manufactured by Parker, which is also part of the FMM.  With this regulator, drivers can go further on a tank of fuel when compared to current system limitations, as the regulator enables the vehicle to operate from 3,600 pounds per square inch (PSI) when full to a minimum 230 PSI.  The regulator is designed to reduce leak points and weight, and the high-capacity filter is larger than most competitive products, so it can be serviced less frequently.

“With the technologies built into our system, the usable capacity of these new roof-mount systems is a game changer,” said Zimmerman.  “Our customers can now have the range of five tanks in a four-tank package,” he said.

The design of the nose of the roof-mount system incorporates three separate alloy steel pieces to protect the CNG system from tree limbs and other damage.  If damage to the nose does occur, it is easier, safer and less expensive to repair or replace one or more segments rather, than the entire nose.

The comprehensive pressure relief device (PRD) network vents fuel in the system out through vertical vents in case of fire or other emergency.  The PRD is engineered for rugged off-road use, safety, and durability and is fitted with weatherproof caps to protect the system from environmental elements.  For safety conscious fleets, the PRD lines are coated in red to indicate to service personnel that the entire system must be completely purged before servicing the PRD system.

“Our systems are designed with safety concerns specific to this industry in mind, and with the ability to closely monitor fuel consumption through telematics, managers will have the data and intelligence they need to make important business decisions about their fleets,” Zimmerman added.

New and replacement parts for these systems are manufactured in-house by Momentum Fuel Technologies, ensuring quality and improving speed to customers.  The 70DGE and 87DGE roof-mount systems are in production for immediate delivery.

Momentum Fuel Technologies offers the industry’s first complete CNG fuel system solution for Class 6 to Class 8 trucks, with comprehensive support from design and manufacturing, to sales and ongoing service throughout the product life cycle.  This product line was developed after thousands of hours of customer interviews and is focused on innovative design, advanced safety features, installation expertise and the industry’s most comprehensive support network.  In addition to the new roof-mount 70DGE and 87DGE products, Momentum offers side-mount systems in 30DGE, 40DGE and 45DGE (all with or without the FMM) and back-of-cab systems in 70DGE, 75DGE, 115DGE and 150DGE.
