Following a proposed change from its new sustainability manager, Royal Oak, Mich. City commissioners officially amended the city’s composting ordinance to help keep food waste out of landfills.
“It’s really part of the city’s Climate Action Plan,” said Mayor Michael Fournier, “and a way to educate residents.”
Royal Oak’s Sustainability Manager, Angela Fox, was hired back in November 2023 and suggested the change to the city’s composting rules.
Now, the city collects food scraps every Saturday. Fox says that, since February, they have collected three tons of food waste and kept it out of landfills.
“This is something on everybody’s radar,” Fox said. “Royal Oak is one of 10 cities and counties looking at recycling and composting innovations.”
