Recycled Glass Gets a New Opportunity in Colorado

While many think glass is a big problem for the recycling industry, John Lair, the owner of the upcoming $11 million Momentum Recycling plant in Colorado, thinks differently.

Lair has been processing recycled glass for seven years in his Salt Lake City-based company, and now he is ready for a new challenge.

The new recycling plant, which plans to handle 5,000 tons of glass each month, will use a fleet of Austrian optical sorting machines to separate glass by color and divert trash into a water-free, chemical-free process.

The Denver Post has the details:

John Lair rattles a plastic bag full of broken glass.

There are bits of plastic, paper labels and chunks of food mixed in with the green, amber and clear — or flint — shards.

"And this is pretty clean," he said of the glass-recycling sample from Waste Management's materials recovery facility on Franklin Street. "Still, it takes a lot of work to clean this up."
