Indian Wells, Calif. - The Palm Springs area of Indian Wells, Calif., home of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic golf tournament, has made recycling a hole-in-one goal for the event.
To meet waste reduction mandates set by the state in 1991, the city came up with a cost-effective recycling plan. With the help of the tournament office and the Indian Wells Country Club, an aluminum can and cardboard collection program was initiated this year.
Using 42 special event recycling containers, the tournament's organizers collected approximately 10,000 cans, or 400 pounds of aluminum, and approximately 450 pounds of cardboard.
"We moved the bins right next to the trash receptacles [so people could] identify which were for trash and which were for cans," said Ricardo Prado, director of maintenance and engineering at the club. "We identified areas where the crowds were most concentrated."
Next year, he added, organizers expect to double the volumes of collected recyclables by placing an ad in the tournament program to alert spectators. Also, on-site signage should help to increase awareness, he said.
Glass, plastic and tournament programs also will be added to the list of recyclable materials collected.
"Not only does this program reduce the amount of trash we landfill," said city manager George Watts, "but it also reduces clean-up costs after the tournament and creates revenue."
