SWANA Presents Excellence Awards For Landfills, WTE, Recycling And Collection and WTE

The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Md., announced the winners of the 1994 Recycling Excellence Awards Program at its International Solid Waste Exposition in San Antonio, Texas, August 1 to 4, 1994. Award categories included collection, recycling, landfills and waste-to-energy.
The Collection Excellence Program Award recognizes communities whose collection system and transfer operations are technically sound and economically feasible. The applications were divided into three categories: technology and systems ap-plication, safety programs and spec- ial programs.
The winners were the Palm Beach County Solid Waste Authority's North County Transfer Station in Juniper, Fla., and the Seminole County Transfer Station in Long-wood, Fla.
The Recycling Excellence Program Award recognizes recycling programs that have been carefully developed and implemented through a cooperative effort between the implementing agency or company and the community.
The programs were classified into three categories: collection, source reduction and complete programs. They were also judged by population category: fewer than 100,000, between 100,000 and 500,000 and greater than 500,000.
The System Excellence Award in the category of complete programs for populations greater than 500,000 was given to Metropolitan Toronto's Waste Diversion Program.
The Meritorious Achievement Award in the category of collection programs for populations less than 100,000 was given to the Horry County Solid Waste Authority Inc., Conway, S.C.
The Meritorious Achievement Award for complete programs with populations less than 100,000 was given to the Sevier Solid Waste Re-cycling Program in Sevier, Tenn.
The Meritorious Achievement Award for complete programs in populations between 100,000 and 500,000 was awarded to the Mahon-ing County Solid Waste Management District, Youngstown, Ohio.
The Landfill Excellence Awards Program recognizes landfills that achieve the purposes of sound, state-of-the-art landfill principle: disposal of solid waste, the protection of public health and the maintenance of environmental quality. Ap-plicants were divided into three categories: less than 500 tons per day, between 501 and 1,500 tpd and more than 1,500 tpd.
The System Excellence: Category I Award for landfills with less than 500 tpd was given to the Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority Waste Management Facility, Lebanon, Pa.
The System Excellence: Category I Award for less than 500 tpd was presented to the North County Re-cycling Center and Sanitary Landfill, San Joaquin County, Lodi, Calif.
The System Excellence: Category I Award for less than 500 tpd was given to the Northern Oaks Recycl-ing and Disposal Facility, Waste Management of Michigan Inc., Har-rison, Mich.
The System Excellence: Category II Award for between 501 and 1,500 tpd was given to Suburban South Recycling and Disposal Facility, Waste Management of Ohio Inc., Glenford, Ohio.
The System Excellence: Category III Award for more than 1,500 tpd was presented to the Lopez Canyon Sanitary Landfill, Los Angeles.
Applications for the Waste-To-En-ergy Systems Excellence Program were divided into three categories: less than 500 tpd, between 500 and 1,000 tpd and more than 1,000 tpd.
Applications were accepted for mass burn, modular and refuse-de-rived fuel systems.
The System Excellence Award for between 500 and 1,000 tpd was given to Stanislaus Resource Recov-ery Facility, Ogden Martin Systems of Stanislaus Inc., Crows Landing, Calif.
The System Excellence Award for more than 1,000 tpd was presented to the Pasco County Solid Waste Re-source Recovery Facility, Ogden Martin Systems of Pasco Inc., Spring Hill, Fla.
The System Excellence Award for more than 1,000 tpd was given to the Lancaster County Resource Re-covery Facility, Ogden Martin Sys-tems of Lancaster Inc., Lancaster, Pa.
Awards The Society of the Plastics Industry has awarded Perstorp Xytec Inc., Tacoma, Wash., the 1994 Recycle Award for the company's collapsible plastic container.
The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc., Washington, D.C., has awarded Reps. Al Swift (D-Wash.) and Blanche Lambert (D-Ark.) a recycling award for their contributions to recycling and proposed Superfund reform.
The Solid Waste Association of North America, Silver Spring, Md., has awarded Procter & Gamble, San An-tonio, the first Waste Cutter award for reducing its packaging 25 percent.
Contracts The South Car-olina Department of Health and Environmental Control has awarded HazWaste Indus-tries Inc., Richmond, Va., a contract for a remedial investigation and feasibility study.
American Ref-Fuel Co., Hou-ston, has awarded a contract to Fluor Daniel to provide engineering, procurement and construction services to the company's waste-to-energy plant in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Little Rock, Ark., and Okla-homa City have contracted with Zarn Inc., Reidsville, N.C., to supply fully-automated, 90-gallon carts.
Distributors Northeast Elec-tro Brake Inc., Rutland, Vt., has agreed to distribute Amer-ican Electro Brake, Roanoke, Va., products.
Gundle Lining Systems Inc., Houston, has been named a national distributor of Phillips Driscopipe, Richardson, Texas.
Fiscal United Waste Systems Inc., Greenwich, Conn., an-nounced the company's revenue for the second quarter was $27,228,102, compared to $20,108,140 for the second quarter of 1993, and income was $7,082,628, compared to $4,332,396 for the second quarter of 1993.
Racotek Inc., Minn-eapolis, announced second quarter net sales of $695,000, compared to net sales of $129,000 for the second quarter of 1993. The second quarter net loss was $2,814,000, compared to a net loss of $1,976,000 for the second quarter of 1993.
