The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) sent a letter in hopes the Senate would recognize waste-to-energy as a renewable energy source. In the letter to Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), SWANA asked him to include waste-to-energy in his renewable portfolio standard, which is being considered by the Senate.

Bingaman is expected to introduce the portfolio as part of an amendment to S. 1115, the Energy Proficiency and Promotion Act.
