Toronto Delays Debate over Privatized Garbage Pickup

Facing unwelcome advice against contracting out garbage collection east of Yonge St., Mayor John Tory’s administration has punted the thorny issue until late next year.
Councillor Jaye Robinson, public works chair and a close Tory ally, successfully proposed Tuesday that her committee vote to delay the debate until the fourth quarter of 2016.
She noted contract talks are about to start with the union that represents collectors, whose contract ends Dec. 31. Since contracting out could affect staffing levels, it makes sense to wait, Robinson said.
The postponement comes a week after release of a staff report on the issue that was heavily criticized by Robinson, Tory and other members of the mayor’s administration.
