Wastecon '95: It's A Wrap
January 1, 1996
WORLD WASTES STAFF
More than 4,200 solid waste professionals journeyed to Baltimore in October to attend what is being hailed as the most successful solid waste expo sponsored by the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA).
"Wastecon '95 proved to be SWANA's most successful show to date," said Caroline Lacey, the association's director of expositions. "We had the widest variety of displays and equipment that we've ever had," she added.
In addition to record numbers of attendees, Wastecon '95 attracted more than 250 exhibitors to the annual event, which was held Sunday through Friday, October 22 to 27, 1995.
Kurt Schmoke, Baltimore's mayor, was the keynote speaker at the opening breakfast on Tuesday, which also included the annual meeting and technical awards.
Wastecon presented more than 21 technical sessions and nine training course, including classes that offered certification in three areas: Transfer Station Manager, Recycling Manager or MSW Manager 1.
The technical sessions and courses were coordinated by SWANA's Center for Solid Waste Education and Training. Technical tours to 11 facilities in the Baltimore area also ran throughout the week.
Technical sessions covered several landfill areas including gas recovery and reclamation; collection, transfer, waste to energy, special waste, planning and management and recycling.
Officials announced that SWANA's Wastecon '96 will be held in Portland from September 23 to 26.
