Winnipeg, Manitoba, is considering two new contracts for solid waste collection that would go to Miller Waste Systems Inc. for northwest Winnipeg and GFL Environmental Inc. for southeast Winnipeg. But several city councilors are voicing opposition to the deal.

The companies would replace Emterra Environmental and Progressive Waste Solutions when their contracts expire in October 2017. The new contracts would cost $24.7 million.

The Winnipeg Sun has the details on the concerns:

The plan quickly drew opposition from some council members. Councillors Ross Eadie (Mynarski), Jason Schreyer (Elmwood-East Kildonan) and Shawn Dobson (St. Charles) argue the selection process failed to give full consideration of public collection, which they believe could be cheaper.

Coun. Matt Allard (St. Boniface) joined the opposition Monday, pushing for further consideration of the in-house option.
