Casper, Wyo. - Integrated solid waste management systems are popping up across the country and ci-ties in Wyoming are jumping on the bandwagon.
For example, the city council of Casper, Wyo., has adopted a new sol-id waste management plan that re-portedly will re- duce the city's waste stream by as much as 32 percent.
The plan, which will affect the city's 52,000 residents, integrates 12 solid waste management efforts including: education and public involvement; source re-duction; a drop-off facility; curbside collection for recyclables, yard waste, commercial paper and cardboard; recyclables processing and marketing; and yard waste composting and marketing. The plan also includes household hazardous waste collection; landfilling/balefilling; monitoring costs and progress; and evaluating future waste-to-energy options. In addition, the city plans to test a weight-based pricing system as well as new collection equipment and routes.
The programs will be phased in over the next four years.
R.W. Beck, the Seattle-based consulting and engineering firm that completed the plan, estimates the programs will create 31 new jobs in the city's private and public sectors by 1999.
