The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has approved a proposed expansion of the IESI Bethlehem Landfill in Pennsylvania, which is expected to extend the landfill’s life by five and a half years.
The approval allows the landfill to grow within its 224-acre facility, to put new trash on top of 22 acres that have been used as a landfill and on 6 acres of new land and to install liners and gas and leachate collection systems to contain odors.

The landfill in Lower Saucon Township will be allowed to expand, the Department of Environment Protection said Friday.
The DEP permit allows the IESI Bethlehem Landfill to grow within its 224-acre facility on Applebutter Road and to put new trash atop about 22 acres that had been used as a landfill and on 6 acres of new land.
Councilwoman Donna Louder wasn’t surprised by the DEP approval because the use is allowed in the area and there was little residents could do to stop it.
“It’s just something we have to accept,” she said.
