The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has awarded a total of $14.5 million in grants to local recycling programs. The figure is nearly double the amount that the department awarded in 2008, when DEP handed out $8 million to local recycling efforts.

“These grants will be of great help to local governments that want to keep doing the right thing for the environment by maintaining strong recycling programs,” said DEP Acting Commissioner Mark N. Mauriello in a press release. “Local governments will use this money to help pay recycling coordinators who quarterback these efforts, fund public education campaigns, and make sure residents continue to comply with recycling laws.”
