Lake County, Fla., to Distribute Bear-Resistant Trash Carts to Residents
The new carts will come in handy this fall, when bear activity is more common in the area.

Residents in Lake County, Fla., are beginning to receive their bear-resistant trash carts, which were purchased with a $200,000 grant from the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
So far, 840 carts have been purchased, 333 residents have signed up to replace their current cart with a bear-resistant cart for $40 and 71 carts have been delivered to residents.
The new carts will come in handy this fall, when bear activity is more common in the area.

More than a third of Lake County’s allotment of 840 bear-proof trash cans are spoken for by residents living in areas with the most reported human-bear interactions.
A total of 333 people have signed up for the specialized cans and 71 have been delivered so far, county spokeswoman Elisha Pappacoda said Thursday.
The carts were acquired thanks to a $200,000 Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission grant and are available for $40 on a first-come, first-served basis for affected residents.
