Lane County, Ore., Launches Garbage Guru to Combat Confusion at the Bin

In an effort to combat confusion at the recycling bin, Lane County, Ore., has rolled out Garbage Guru, an online tool that allows residents to type items into a search bar and find out whether or not they’re recyclable.

The county accepts a wide variety of items, but residents aren’t always aware of what can actually be recycled. In the city of Eugene, for example, milk jugs can be recycled but juice jugs cannot, so the online tool will be helpful for those residents who are uncertain about what to place in their recycling bin.

Let's face it; recycling is complicated.

That doesn't mean that you shouldn't do it, it just means that you should pay attention to what you're tossing in that bin, or taking to a transfer station.

Recycling has changed recently, because China is blocking the import of many recyclable items. That means that certain things that were recyclable, now belong in the trash. That means plastic tubes, like yogurt and sour cream, or boxes like for soup or creamer.
