Manchester, N.H., Launches Pilot Automated Waste Collection Program
The board of mayor and aldermen will make a decision about expanding the program citywide based on the program’s results.

A yearlong pilot automated waste collection program began yesterday in Manchester, N.H. Pilot program customers, who reside in portions of wards 6, 7 and 12, purchased their new carts at a 50 percent discount. The carts are compatible with the new automated truck’s mechanical arm, which lifts the carts from the curb and dumps the waste in the back of the truck.
A report will be made about the pilot program, and the board of mayor and aldermen will make a decision about expanding the program citywide based on the program ’s results.

James Grandmaison spins the wheel of the city’s newest trash truck, headed towards another stop along Island Pond Road. While his right hand steers the truck alongside a tall green cart, his left works a joystick controlling the large metal arm emerging from the vehicle’s midsection.
The arm grabs, lifts and empties the cart, then places it curbside once again, upright with the lid closed.
“It’s like a video game,” said Grandmaison.
