Over the past few years, Landon Rozeboom, a 10-year-old boy with autism and Holland, Mich., resident, has formed a special friendship with his garbage collector Michelle Copan. When Copan stops at Landon’s home during her route, Landon pays close attention to her work by following behind the truck in a car or riding behind the truck on his bike.
In addition to watching her work, Landon has made Copen a Valentine, painted her pictures and bought her a dancing hula-girl from Hawaii to show her how much she means to him. And in return, Copan gifts Landon with his favorite candy, Tootsie Rolls.

A small act of kindness turned into an unexpected friendship between a young Holland boy and a woman who drives a garbage truck.
Around the time now-10-year-old Landon Rozeboom started preschool, his family started noticing changes in his behavior.
“When kids would be playing together, he would be off by himself,” Barb Alderink, Landon’s grandmother, said. “When you try to start a conversation, he couldn’t look at you, no eye contact.”
