Mobile, Ala., Delays Decision on Single Stream Recycling
Concerns were raised that the proposed plan could lead to legal difficulty between Mobile’s Solid Waste Authority and the city’s hauler Waste Management.
The future of recycling in Mobile, Ala., was discussed last week when the City Council reviewed Mayor Sandy Stimpson’s proposed single stream recycling plan and two recycling contracts, which raised concerns that the proposed plan could lead to legal difficulty between Mobile’s Solid Waste Authority and the city’s hauler Waste Management.
Under the proposed single stream recycling plan, unsorted recyclables would be shipped out of the city for sorting and processing and drop-off sites would be added to the city’s seven districts.
The contracts with Mobile’s Solid Waste Authority and Waste Management are currently tabled for three weeks, and a trial run of the new single stream recycling system will continue to take place at the city recycling center.

It appears it will be at least a few more weeks before the future of recycling in Mobile is decided.
The administration of Mayor Sandy Stimpson has proposed a substantial change. Rather than requiring patrons to sort their materials, the new system would accept unsorted recyclables, which would then be shipped out of the city for sorting and processing. Administration officials said last week their goal ultimately is to add drop-off sites until there's one in each of Mobile's seven districts.
