The Salem, Ore., City Council recently approved a set of garbage rate increases to help haulers deal with rising business costs and declining revenue from recycling markets.
With the approved increases, Marion County residents with 35-gallon bins will pay 80 cents more a month starting next year, and Polk County residents with 36-gallon bins will pay 25 cents more a month starting next year. In 2019, the rates for Marion County residents will increase by 60 cents a month, and the rates for Polk County residents will increase by 25 cents a month.
Statesman Journal has more:
Garbage rates will slowly ratchet up for Salem residents over the next two years after city councilors approved a set of increases aimed at helping haulers deal with rising business costs. The first round of new rates kick in Jan. 1, 2018.
With the approved increases, Marion County residents with 35-gallon cans will pay 80 cents a month more next year. Polk County residents with those cans will pay 25 cents more a month. Rates will go up again in 2019, adding 60 cents a month to the Marion County ratepayers' bills and 25 cents for Polk County residents.
Marion County ratepayers pay more than those in West Salem partially because haulers dump Marion County trash at an incinerator north of Salem with higher operating costs.
