Oxford County Saved Money from Switching to Single-Stream

Oxford County saw savings last year after September's switch to weekly, single-stream waste collection meant one truck per route instead of two.

In addition to saving that money, Oxford also saw a slight drop in the average tonnes of waste collected per month and a parallel increase in the average tonnes of recycling collected per month. As part of the switch, the county also saw a one per cent increase in its average monthly residual waste -- material that remains after waste treatment -- from five to six per cent.

Waste management and rural properties supervisor Dave Vermeeren said the increase in residual waste is a result of it being more difficult to process waste in a single stream.
