Portland Garbage Company Named Top Workplace
October 16, 2020
Portland, OR -- As essential workers, the drivers and employees at Arrow Sanitary Service in North Portland have continued to work throughout the pandemic and wildfire smoke-filled days, delivering garbage and recycling services to their hundreds of customers in the Portland Metro area.
For the second year in a row, The Oregonian has listed Arrow Sanitary Service as a Top Workplace in both Oregon and Southwest Washington. The Oregonian Media Group recognized fewer than a hundred companies and organizations in Oregon and Southwest Washington as Top Workplaces for 2020. The companies are recognized based solely on surveys about the workplace completed by their own employees.
“I could not be more proud of our team for this accomplishment, among many more. The culture that the Arrow team has created has been incredibly rewarding. Having the opportunity to lead such a dynamic, committed, hard-working group of people is an incredible honor. This nomination as a Top Workplace comes as no surprise, thanks to all of our frontline employees,” said Josh Brown, District Manager at Arrow Sanitary Service.
A Waste Connections company branch, Arrow Sanitary has been serving the metro area since 1956 and is proving why its employees recently voted it one of the Top Workplaces for a second year in a row. Waste Connections is a proud signatory of the CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion™ pledge. The CEO Action for Diversity & Inclusion is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion within the workplace.
With more than 60 years of experience in waste management, Arrow Sanitary Service has formed a culture that reflects its main goal for its employees – for each of them to return safely to their homes and families after every workday. To ensure this, the company holds all employees accountable for the safety of themselves and one another through its “See It, Say It,” policy.
“Safety is not negotiable in our organization. The well being of our employees and the communities we are privileged to serve is what drives our day to day decisions,” said Brown.
From management and leadership roles to drivers and those working on the front lines, Arrow Sanitary Service tasks everyone to play their part in making a dangerous line of work as safe as possible. Its impressive safety culture was highlighted when Bill White, its veteran driver of more than 30 years who has never had a single incident, was presented last year with the National Residential Driver of the Year award by the National Waste and Recycling Association (NWRA).
Aside from giving back to its employees for their hard work, Arrow Sanitary Service provides superior servant leadership to every member of its staff. Based on results from an annual employee survey, the general consensus is that employees appreciate the efforts made by management to empower each individual, as well as how far the company goes to ensure that each employee feels cared about.
